ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is a “nerve extraction” from a tooth. It is very important to be done on time, because it saves the tooth from extraction. The whole procedure is done completely painlessly with anesthesia.

When is a root canal treatment required?

The most common cause of a root canal treatment is caries which has not been removed in time, but progressed and affected the nerve of a root canal. When this occurs, bacteria can accumulate in the root canal and decompose organic ingredients as well as various toxins that cause an intense inflammatory reaction of the tooth, that is, swelling and pain. It is then necessary to treat the root canal or remove all the bacteria and toxins.

A specific problem with a bacterial infection of a root is that the body cannot be defended from the infection with the help of white blood cells. Actually, the infection is located inside a root, causing a rapid deterioration of blood and lymph vessels in a pulp chamber resulting in severe and unbearable pain. The only way to solve this is a tooth treatment, that is, a root canal treatment as the source of the infection.

Indications for endodontic therapy

A problematic nerve that needs to be removed can be detected in various ways. First of all, by accident, while treating a tooth, a dentist can also detect a rounded illumination at the top of a root of another tooth in the X-ray display, which in fact means that there is a cavity in bone tissue caused by an infection within the root canal. In this case, the tooth is avital and it is necessary to treat the teeth. Also, if you notice white dots on your gums above your teeth that look like pimples, which dentists call a fistula, make sure you immediately contact your dentist to treat the root canal of the teeth. Next, if you notice that your tooth is changing its colour, most often darkens, immediately, visit your dentist. During the treatment of caries of a tooth, a dentist can diagnose a damaged nerve and immediately start the treatment of the teeth root.

If you notice any of these indications, do not waste time, contact us and schedule a check-up.

How is root canal treatment performed?

The whole procedure is carried out with anesthesia, painlessly. Firstly, trepanation is conducted, or removal of pulp roof, the removal of coronary pulp and the opening of the entrance into the root canal or root canals. Then, pulp extirpation follows, i.e. the cleaning of a tooth canal or mechanical treatment of a canal by which the infectious agents are removed. For this purpose, an irrigator is used, which represents a chemical substance that eliminates organic and inorganic contents within a tooth canal. When the cleaning of a tooth canal is completed, a tooth canal is filled. For this purpose, gutta percha and specific pastes are inserted into a tooth canal. After filling a tooth canal, it is sealed, preventing a new infection of the tooth. Upon the completion of endodontic treatment, the cavity is closed and your tooth is saved.

In the case of a periapical lesion, or an inflammatory process at the top of a root, a tooth treatment can be done in two ways. A conservative method is to treat a tooth root by inserting medication in a root canal, which is carried out through several stages. The other way is surgical, if the first one is unfeasible. Then, apicoectomy, that is, tooth root resection, is performed. It involves raising gums and eliminating the inflammation and cyst in a bone. Of course, tooth treatment is always done with anesthesia.

As for a root canal treatment, the price depends on which tooth is under the endodontic therapy, i.e. how many root canals the tooth has. After intervention an avital i.e. treated tooth should be further reinforced with dental composite (white fillings) and glass fibres, or metal overlays and crowns unless there is enough remaining tooth.

If a root canal treatment is not done in time, it is certain that you will lose the tooth. Tooth decay due to infection is very fast, therefore, as soon as you notice the slightest change in a tooth or surrounding gums, and especially if you there is swelling and unbearable pain, immediately contact a dentist to perform a root canal treatment. Tooth anatomy

Each tooth consists of hard external structures (enamel, dentin and cementum) and soft tissue (pulp). In the pulp there is a so-called nerve, that is, a tooth nerve, as well as blood and lymph vessels, connective tissue, and certain cells. A nerve actually links a root tip to the surrounding tissue and then extends along the entire tooth root and enters the inner part of a tooth crown, so-called pulp chamber. It is known that a dental nerve is extremely important for every tooth since it enables its growth. However, it also has a function when a tooth completes its growth, which is a sensory function of a tooth to respond to warmth, coldness, sweetness, and pressure.
